Q: Recent literature suggests facilities begin using some of the interview portions of the MDS 3.0 and the Rand report mentions that training materials were developed to assist staff with interview techniques. Are any of these training tools available for general use?
Diane: The training materials mentioned in the Rand report were not released to the general public, but are expected to be incorporated into the MDS 3.0 training materials scheduled for release by CMS in March 2009. However, it’s a good idea to start practicing basic interviewing skills now. Your staff can practice interviewing each other and focus on skills that are not specific to the MDS 3.0, such as using appropriate body language, listening skills, asking a mix of open- and close-ended questions, and paraphrasing the interviewee’s responses.
