The HCPro long-term care team recently posed a few questions to the readers of our periodicals for nursing home providers to better understand how professionals in the field are gearing for the impending introduction of the payroll-based staffing journal (PBJ)—an electronic system through which, starting in July 2016, SNFs will be required to submit staffing data pulled directly from their payrolls.
The results showed that 8% of respondents were very prepared for this change, 56% were somewhat prepared, and 36% were not prepared. In order to get more prepared, CMS has opened their voluntary submission period, beginning Oct. 1, 2015.
The purpose of the voluntary submission period is for facilities and vendors to test their processes to submit data in the required format in advance of the mandatory submission period, beginning July 1, 2016.
Registration is still OPEN for ALL nursing homes and will remain open.

– Step 1: Obtain a CMSNet User ID for PBJ Individual, Corporate and Third Party users, if you don’t already have one for other QIES applications (https://www.qtso.com/cmsnet.html ) (many users may already have this access for MDS submission).
– Step 2: Obtain a PBJ QIES Provider ID for CASPER Reporting and PBJ system access (https://mds.qiesnet.org/mds_home.html ).
