Updated RAI Manual released: What’s changed?

The updated MDS 3.0 RAI Manual has been released.

The changes to the RAI Manual are in alignment with what we expected from the draft released earlier this year. There are a total of 21 change tables, but they mostly include language changes to clarify coding instructions/criteria or definitions. Such changes were made to 12 sections of the MDS: A, G, GG, H, I, J, L, M, N,O, P and Q.

Besides the language clarifications, there have been two additions to the MDS 3.0 item sets – sections N & P:

New Section N Items:

  • Updated N0410. Medications Received to include H. Opioid.
  • N0450 Antipsych Med Review (includes reporting of antipsych administration, whether a gradual dose reduction (GDR) was attempted and whether the GDR was clinically contraindicated)
  • New Section P Items:
  • Title changes from “Restraints” to “Restraints & Alarms”
  • P0200 Alarms – facilities muse code each type of alarm used and frequency of use

Section I includes a new paragraph for additional clarity that is noteworthy:

I3200 – In accordance with requirements at §483.80(a) Infection Prevention and Control Program, the facility must establish routine, ongoing and systematic collection, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of surveillance data to identify infections. The facility’s surveillance system must include a data collection tool and the use of nationally recognized surveillance criteria. Facilities are expected to use the same nationally recognized criteria chosen for use in their Infection Prevention and Control Program to determine the presence of a UTI in a resident.
