CMS released a final rule on September 26 requiring hospitals to provide SNF quality reports to patients at discharge. These reports should include information about SNFs such as quality measures, star ratings, and readmission rates.
To avoid favoritism, hospitals cannot legally recommend a preferred SNF to patients, so patients are often forced to locate a suitable nearby SNF without any assistance. This rule aims to give patients the information they need to make an informed, unbiased decision when selecting a SNF.
Patients will now also be able to access their medical records in the format of their choice, according to CMS administrator Seema Verma. This will ensure that patients are informed of their post-acute needs prior to selecting a SNF.
