CMS and HHS announce new CMMI director

The appointment of Brad Smith as the new director of the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) was announced Monday by CMS and HHS.

Smith, who previously served as COO for Aspire Health, will replace previous director Adam Boehler, who was appointed last summer to serve as CEO of the United States International Development Finance Corporation.

“Brad’s experience thinking outside-the-box to improve healthcare as a successful entrepreneur, along with his stellar academic and policy background, have prepared him well to lead CMMI and bring innovative solutions to our healthcare system’s most pressing challenges,” said CMS Administrator Seema Verma in an HHS news release.

The CMMI is responsible for developing and testing health care payment and service delivery models, many of which such as ACOs and bundled-payment programs, have a direct impact on SNF payments.
